Dosing Edibles

‘Tis the season to get high on edibles, as 2019 marks the very first year that edible cannabis products are legally available in Canada. It’s important to know that unlike methods of inhalation, the effect of edibles takes time to set in and affect us differently. When you smoke or use a vaporizer thc is absorbed through the lungs, quickly traveling to the brain and central nervous system which will make us feel high within seconds of inhaling.
When an edible is eaten, the thc must first be digested by the stomach, then liver, where it is converted into a more psychoactive form of thc. The digestion of the edible also causes the effects to last longer than with inhaled cannabis.
If you are used to the timing of smoking or vaping, then be sure to give yourself enough time for the effects to kick in after consuming an edible. It’s tempting to eat more when you don’t feel anything after 30 minutes, but this can lead to an overconsumption of thc, and the uncomfortable feeling of being too high.
What is a standard first time dose?
It’s suggested that individuals who are new to cannabis start with a dose of 5-10 mg of thc. You can always take more, but you can never take less. The saying: “start low and go slow” can’t be emphasized enough. Taking too much thc can lead to racing thoughts and unwelcome sensations.

Should I take an edible on an empty stomach?
What you have in your stomach at the time you take an edible will affect your experience. Taking an edible on an empty stomach can affect you more quickly than if you’ve already eaten because your stomach and liver start processing the thc immediately after you eat it. It’s then very quickly sent out to your bloodstream and your brain. If you eat an edible on an empty stomach just before consuming food, it will speed up your metabolism and you’ll feel the effects even more quickly.
If you take the edible along with some food, the edible and food will be processed together. This means the effects will come on more slowly, and they’ll last longer, but with less intensity.
